Beatles covers – no type of cover divides opinion so hotly as an interpretation of a song that is basically perfect, and Beatles songs fall into that category more often than not. That’s why I don’t have a lot of Beatles covers. Though I think “Long and Winding Road” could stand reinterpretation, as age hasn’t really reversed the initial critical opinion that the song was a bit too Phil-Spector-ized.
I grab Beatles covers basically only for artists that I love (most of the ones you’ll see here) or because they are absolute oddities (like the Godhead song – which is a metal cover of “Eleanor Rigby”*). There are a lot of Beatles covers out there, and very few of them try to reinvent or innovate. Because, well, it’s the Beatles. Still, I think that the ones here are pretty okay to listen to.
Belle and Sebastian – Here Comes The Sun
Glen Phillips – I’ll Follow The Sun
Rufus Wainwright – Across the Universe
*Local NEPA funk band Bottom, which broke up during my college days, did a kickass “Eleanor Rigby.” I wish it were recorded before the band split.
