in Things I Hate

The radio in our office has been playing Christmas music for a few days straight now and it’s driving me crazy.

“But Jeff,” you’re thinking, “you love Christmas.  You’re all about Christmas specials and ugly sweaters and Christmas music – especially Christmas music!”

It’s true; I do love Christmas music.  But there are a few songs that fill me with such a supernatural level of hate that I suspect its origins may actually be magical.  Two, exactly.  The first is “Christmas Shoes,” which I haven’t heard played yet.  The second is the version of “Jingle Bells” performed by barking dogs.

This is the part where I link to the song, but I’m not that wicked and it is Christmastime, after all.

See, Barking Dog Jingle Bells is apparently in heavy rotation, which means that I heard it something like four times yesterday.  I start to tire of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” around that point, and that’s one of my favorite Christmas songs ever (and yes, your sad, mopey blogger does have the Death Cab For Cutie cover of that song, but the Darlene Love one is still my favorite).  But replace that with a Phil Spector-styled Wall of Bark and I would start punching people.

I would, however, be all about an album called Christmas With Keyboard Cat.

Do any of you out there like Barking Dog Jingle Bells?  What if they were replaced with baying wolves?

Basically, all Christmas music wears on my patience after a while. Especially if I am in an enclosed space with it too long. I enjoy it in metered doses, but not a steady exposure of it.

I am a huge fan of novelty songs, But not this one. This redifines the term “novelty”. The first time you hear it, it’s like,”Hey! It’ dogs barking Jingle Bells. How novel!” Then it immediately begins sucking.

However, Elvis singing “Here Comes Santa Claus” and any version of “Last Christmas” is alright in my book.

Oh, my sympathies. Christmas Shoes and the dogs barking Jingle Bells are also my 1 and 2 “run screaming from the room” Christmas songs, and four times in one day sounds just PAINFUL. (And I, too, love most Christmas music.)
