Comics I’m Buying This Week

in Stuff I Like

I may have skipped last week because I didn’t get into Comics on the Green until Saturday, but CIBTW is back!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #637 – As much as I like Spidey from issue to issue anyway, there’s maybe one storyline a year that feels big and satisfying. Last year’s was New Ways To Die and this year’s looks to be The Grim Hunt*, the last issue of which is hitting stores today.

ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN WOLVERINE #2 (OF 6) – I wasn’t 100% sold on this until the final page of issue #1 and the cover of issue #2, which feature a robot Devil Dinosaur and Wolverine shooting a Phoenix gun, respectively. Honestly, for a writer that isn’t Jason Aaron, I might not have come back for issue #2.

AVENGERS ACADEMY #2 – Christos Gage and Mike McKone are doing what is probably my favorite Avengers book right now (though New Avengers is close) with some idiosyncratic classic Avengers (and Justice) acting as the faculty to a bunch of potentially wayward powered teens. The first issue led to me and the Fantastic Fangirls’ Jennifer talking about educational theory with Gage on Twitter, so that’s pretty cool, right?

BIRDS OF PREY #3 – Love this team, love Gail Simone, so over DC’s whole ‘Brightest Day’ thing.

CHEW #12 – Rob Guillory just got nommed for a Harvey for this book and if he doesn’t win it, he might have been robbed.  Quirky, gory, funny.

DAYTRIPPER #8 (OF 10) – This series – an examination of the last day of the main character’s life at varying ages – is never not beautiful and poignant. This may be the work of Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon’s careers to date, which says something about the quality of this book.

GORILLA MAN #1 (OF 3) – Yes.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #28 – Since Matt Fraction took the reins on this book back at #1, this has been the most perfect superhero comic book.

JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #5 – So much better than it has a right to be.

SIXTH GUN #1 & SIXTH GUN #2 – I read the first issue of this online, and it hits all of my fanboy buttons.

THANOS IMPERATIVE #2 (OF 6) – Marvel’s space/cosmic comics have been so good that I’d buy this even it were called Space Lemurs Have A Tea Party.

UNCANNY X-MEN HEROIC AGE #1 & X-MEN SECOND COMING #2 – God help me, I’m starting to get X-Men fatigue. Hopefully the new status quo in these issues will revivify me.

*Okay, maybe it was Shed, the Lizard arc that led directly into The Grim Hunt. But TGH is still pretty righteous.
